Using Character styles in InDesign

What are Character styles?

Charcter styles is a great way to keep consistent in text using Adobe InDesign. In this tutorial you will learn:

  • How to create Character styles?
  • Editing Character styles
  • How to nest Character styles in Paragraph styles?
  • Updating paragraph styles

Why Styles?

If you're not using styles in your InDesign documents then, basically, you are doing things the long way round. Although this tutorial is about Character Styles and admittedly is the easiest to get your head around you want to also check out Paragraph Styles.

Whats with Character Styles?

The way that Character Styles work on the surface is pretty straightforward. You would at first create a Character Style, and then highlight a word or a portion of text that you want to apply the Character Style to, then click on the Character Style you want to apply from within the Character Style window.

However, if you would like to take character styles further you can nest them within Paragraph Styles to get a fantastic level of control in InDesign. So if you want to become a style Guru then go through our styles tutorials and Computer Tutoring.
