Teams Public Team

In Microsoft Teams you can create Teams that contain channels that better able you to control and organise projects, departments and information. However, a question that is often asked is what's the difference between a public and private team in Microsoft Teams? Also, when should you create a public Team in Microsoft Teams? Hopefully this page will go a long way to answering that question.

What is a Public Team?

In basic terms a Public team is a team that anybody within your organisation "CAN" join. The word "can" is important here, emphasizing the fact that anybody can join the public team who wants to. Of course, they need to know that the team exists, but they don't need to be invited to a public team, as they would a private team.

How to Create a Public Team?

If you want to create a public team:

Click on the Join or Create Team button at the bottom left of the screen:

Join or create a team button

Next, Click on the Create a Team button.

Create Team Button

After that, click on From Scratch.

Now, from the "What kind of team will this be?" box; select Public.

What kind of team will this be?

Enter the Team name and description. For the example in the tutorial we entered O365 Innovation Team as the title. For the description we can enter: "Getting employees on board with the new Office 365 experience."

New team title and description

Click on Create and you're done.

How to Join a Public Team?

Once a public team has been created, others can begin joining the Team. They can join the public team by:

  1. Click on Join or create a team. (Bottom left).
  2. Use search button, in the top right corner, to search for your Team.
    Search Teams Box
  3. The team you are searching for will appear. Click Join to join the team.
